The Archaic Period
This may be confusing to some, but there are actually three different archaic periods defined by archeologists. The first is the early dynasty period of Egypt, spanning the years of 3100 BC to 2600 BC. The second is the archaic period of Greece, covering the years of 750 BC to 480 BC, and the last is the archaic period of the Americas, which covers 8000 BC to 1000 BC.
Now you are probably wondering which period the typical archaic arrowhead is from. Well, most of the archaic arrowheads you will find for sale are the ones from the archaic period of the Americas. These are the ones that were used by the Native Americans thousands of years ago to help them hunt for survival. However, you can still find arrowheads from both the Greece and Egypt archaic periods. If you are buying your archaic arrowheads from a shop, ask the seller what period it's from. The more information you have, the better!
The fact that many of the early archaic arrowheads are so old gives them added value. You should expect the prices to generally be more if the arrowhead dates back farther. But, if you've done any kind of collecting before, you know this isn't always true. There are many factors that go into the value of an archaic arrowhead, besides just the date.
Oftentimes, archaic arrowheads being sold will be labeled as "early", "middle", or "late" archaic period arrowheads. As you probably guessed, the early archaic arrowheads are from the beginning part of the period, the middle is from the middle, and the late archaic arrowheads are from the end of the period. This helps you narrow down the age of the arrowhead a bit more.
Buy Archaic Arrowheads
Unless you know where to look, you may run into some difficultly if you are wanting to buy archaic arrowheads. Thankfully, though, our website lists auctions from sellers and vendors with archaic arrowheads for sale. These auctions are handled through eBay and they make the buying process as simple as a few click of the mouse. You can always find archaic arrowheads at shops and stores, but their inventory may be limited compared to what you can find online.
When buying archaic arrowheads, always look for a date period associated with it. The known date will help you catalog it later and possibly give the archaic arrowhead more value. Also, look for the location the arrowhead was found. The date and location are two most important pieces of information you should try to determine about any archaic arrowhead you are buying.
Good luck on your archaic arrowhead collection!
